What is Ibogaine

Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive substance found in plants in the family Apocynaceae such as Tabernanthe ibogaVoacanga africana, and Tabernaemontana undulata.[3] It is a psychedelic with dissociative properties.

According to preliminary study, it may aid in the treatment of drug addiction. Its use has been linked to severe adverse effects and even death. Between 1990 and 2008, a total of 19 fatalities linked to ibogaine intake were reported, with six people dying of sudden heart failure or cardiopulmonary arrest.

During this time, the total number of subjects who used it without experiencing serious side effects is unclear. In some places, it is utilized as an alternative medicine treatment for drug addiction. Scientific research has stalled as a result of its prohibition in other countries.  Ibogaine is also utilized to help people with psychological and spiritual exploration.Clinical trials using ibogaine derivatives that lack the substance’s psychedelic effects (such as 18-MC) are currently underway,[5] and have been demonstrated to be neither psychedelic nor psychoactive, with a favorable safety profile in humans.

what is ibogaine …

The Pygmy tribes of Central Africa were the first to discover the psychoactivity of the root barks of the iboga tree (Tabernanthe iboga), from which ibogaine is produced, and they passed the information on to the Bwiti tribe of Gabon. After learning about it from the Bwiti tribe, French explorers took iboga back to Europe in 1899–1900, when it was marketed as Lambarene.

African spiritual traditions of the Bwiti, who claim to have learned it from the Pygmy peoples, use ibogaine-containing formulations for therapeutic and ritual purposes. Although Howard Lotsof was the first to promote it as having anti-addictive effects in 1962, its Western use predates that by at least a century.

It was marketed as Lambarène in France and was used as a stimulant. In the 1950s, the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) investigated the effects of ibogaine.
